Getting back on tour almost six weeks after Liberty’s birth is so intoxicating it almost makes my head spin. We arrived in Charlotte, North Carolina this morning and immediately locked ourselves in the stadium, without taking the time to enjoy the views of the city. The excitement is almost like returning to school after summer break. The roadies have all spent time with family or taken a vacation, and all have something to share. They’re gathered in small groups, laughing and joking, invigorated by a break that provided a short rest from the stress of the tour.

“Twenty minutes and we’ll be ready for soundcheck,” John, the technician who takes care of my instruments, tells me when I pass him in the hallway pushing a crate.

“Thanks, has anyone told the others?” I ask as I can’t find anyone, not even Haven and Nicholas.

He shakes his head and shrugs. I smile, wave at him, and try to call Evan, who doesn’t answer.

The stadium for tonight’s concert is enormous, the hallways and rooms running all around it resembling a labyrinth. Some of the doors have signs, but most don’t, complicating my search. The third time I open one full of crates labeled with our band name, my frustration becomes more evident, and I slam it.

“Nervous today?” Nicholas’s voice makes me turn toward him.

I rub my face, aware that even the most stupid things make me irritated lately. “Do you have any idea where everyone is? I can’t find anyone in this maze,” I explain more calmly.

“I think Liberty wouldn’t stop crying, so Faith called Michael, who panicked and made the others nervous. They’re all on their bus trying to figure out what’s going on.” He smiles, shrugging his shoulders, and a sarcastic laugh escapes me. I can’t hide my irritation.

“She’s a six-week-old baby. Crying is what they do, right?” My question comes out more annoyed than I meant it.

I tried to advise Michael that a newborn should stay at home, where it’s quiet, not in a bus driving across the country, but he won’t listen to reason. He wants his family with him and threatened to leave the tour. I understand he wants to see his children grow up, but Levi is one thing, he’s fifteen and finds this life exciting. A newborn who needs constant care and attention is a whole other can of worms.

Nicholas frowns and narrows his mouth in a hard line. He grabs my hand and drags me into a hidden corner behind some crates by the metal staircase that leads to the stage. You’d have to bend down and look this way from the stairs to see me leaning against the wall, him resting a hand on my face, gently stroking my cheek.

I close my eyes and enjoy the contact with him.

“Will you please tell me why you’ve become so short-tempered since that little girl was born?” He gets straight to the point, forcing me to open my eyes and get lost in his.

“Have you noticed that
